Thanks Yous

Lynn related that she and JD were really glad to be back in the office after freezing in the Minnesota cold.  They couldn’t put on enough layers of clothing!  She thanked all the wonderful volunteers who kept everything running smoothly while they were away.  JD also was thrilled with the work everyone had done on the New Year’s Eve Dance and the jam on Saturday.   He especially thanked the guys that we parking the vehicles for the dance in the rain and the cold.  Lee and I second that.  It was just freezing out there and they managed to get everyone taken care of.

Lost and Found

Two items were lost at the New Year’s Eve Dance.  A black wallet with quite a bit of money in it was one of them.  Please see the Activity Office if you find it.  The other was a gold cross with a diamond in it.  It belongs to Romelle Nelson and she is offering a nice reward for its return.

     Important News

Cathy asked the volunteers from the Welcome Committee to stop in the Business Office as we have a lot of new residents.  Our Welcome Committee volunteers take out a packet of information to our residents and can even take the new residents on a tour of the park.

Jam Menu for this coming week is:

Lasagna, macaroni salad, French bread and dessert for $5.50
Brats, chips and dessert for $4.50
BBQ pork sandwich, chips and dessert for $4.50
Chicken Noodle soup, crackers, dessert for $3.50
Coffee and iced tea – 50 cents

Jam Team 2 is up this week for the Jam.  That is the Judy and Steve Good Team.  We could use some help on the jams so please stop in the Activities Office if you would like to volunteer for a team.  We need some tray runners/cleaners and some cleanup people for sure.

Decorate the Large Hall for Valentine’s Day:  Nora Minor could use some volunteers to help decorate for Valentine’s Day.  Meet her in the Large Hall on Monday, January 19th at 8:30 AMNora wouldn’t mind hearing from you ahead of time if you can help out.  She is on Lot 567.

Choir Concert – Mark your calendars for March 1st at 6 PM in the Large Hall.

Picture DirectoriesLynn announced that there has been some progress toward getting the Directoris.  She received the proofs for the directories and will get them turned in right away so that hopefully we will be getting these Directories soon.

Lynn is starting to put together the Activities Calendar for the 2015-2016 so please obtain a Green Activity Sheet to get your activity on the calendar for next year.  If the office is closed just put the sheet into the door slot.

Gold Wing Express is the entertainment for January 11th from 2 to 4 PM.  Tickets are $6 and can be purchased in the Activity Office or at the door.  Gold Wing is traditional music at its best.  It is traditional Southern Gospel, Comedy and Country Favorites.  It is a group of three Native American brothers and their father.  A segment of their performance is dedicated to this Indian Heritage.  Each brother wears his own Native American headdress which represents the Creek Indian Tribe.  They perform and reside in Branson, Missouri and produce their own music show.

The Amber Waves Band will be performing here on January 15th at 7 PM.  Tickets are $6.  This band takes audiences on a delightful tour of modern and historical folk sounds.  The Amber Waves Band features the Costello family and brings an exciting mix of acoustic music, including the sounds of Celtic, Old English, Colonial American, Bluegrass, and Gospel, as well as their own original music.  You can purchase tickets in the Activity Office or buy tickets at the door.
Golden Olympics – Marsha Fabricus will again be coordinating our participation in these events. This is a two month long event that has tons of different categories at various times during the two months for your to participate in.   There is a newspaper flyer available in the Activities Office for anyone wanting to participate or see what all the categories are.  You can be a contest for baking, golfing, walking, biking, any card game you can name, jig saw puzzles, etc. etc.  There are also park participation events where you can Walk and Talk or Bike Ride.  If you register for those and participate, Winter Ranch gets participation points.  The park with the most participants wins those events.  I know we can all walk and talk and a lot of us ride those bikes.  We don’t want our sister park winning again this year, do we???  Let’s get out and participate in the total Rio Grand Valley Event.

Ceramics is starting up on Tuesday and Thursdays from 1 to 4 in the Stained Glass/Ceramics Studio.  Lessons are posted in the room.  They are $3 per class.

Winter Ranch Garage Sale that is open to the public will be held on January 23rd in the Large Hall from 8 to Noon
On January 21st and 22nd, there will be Beginning Card and Maj Jong Lessons classes in the Large Hall from 1 to 3 PM.

Billiards Cue Raffle – The Billiards Group will again be raffling a $300 cue.  The tickets are 1 for $3 or 5 for $5.  The raffle will be drawn on February 16th at the Pool Tournament.  You do not need to be present to win.

The 50th Wedding Anniversary Celebration is scheduled for February 15th from 2 to 4 PM in the Large Hall.  Lynn will be putting up reservations sheets on the Bulletin Boards by the Mail Room this week.  There are three DIFFERENT sheets. Please be diligent about what sheet you register on.   One sheet is for those that are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year.  One is for those that have been married for over 50 years and the third is for guests.  Please make sure you sign on the right form so that we don’t have a mixup.  We REALLY need to know who is celebrating 50 years so we have things prepared.  Same goes for those married over 50 years.
Quilters:  The Winter Ranch Annual Quilt Show sill be on Tuesday, January 27th, 2015.  Watch for registration forms which will be available the week of January 12th.  You may enter quilts of any size from king to miniature, antique quilts, wearables, table runners, purses, tote bags and all other quilted items.  Get your quilted items entered and let’s make this the best show ever.

The Mystery Theater Dinner/Play is “The PolterHeist” this season.   The Dinner Theater will be held February 8th at 5 PM in the Large Hall.  Tickets will go on sale in the Small Hall this Friday at 9 AM.  Tickets are 10 each.  This year their will be a Matinee performance of the play for those that weren’t able to get tickets.  The Matinee version without dinner will be $5 and will be performed on Wednesday, February 11th at 1 PM.  There is no limit on the Matinee.
The Winter Ranch Variety Show “Razzle Dazzle” will be held on February 22nd at 7 PM.  Mark your calendars.  Lee Clement and JoAnn Sullivan are the Coordinators of the event.  They have posted a sign-up sheet to be in the show on the Bulletin Board by the Arts and Crafts Room.  They REALLY need to know as soon as possible who is going to participate.

Selections and Timing of the various acts will be held on February 12th at 9 AM in the Large Hall.  Full Dress rehearsal will be on Saturday, February 21st from 7 to 9 PM in the Large Hall.

The Minnesota Potluck will be on January 25th from 11:30 to 1:30 PM.  See the Bulletin Board near the Rest Rooms in the Large Hall for details.  The date and time have changed so please read this if you are a Minnesotan!!
Kansas/Oklahoma Potluck - January 14th from 12-2 PM in the Large Hall.

Illinois Potluck - January 18th from 12 -2 PM in the Large Hall.

Hippie Party (our theme party for the season) will be held on January 20th from 3 PM to 5:30 in the Large Hall.  There will be a “Groovy” Costume Contest with prizes awarded to the most Wildly Wicked Costumed Couple, The most Righteous Dude, and the Best Hip Chick’s Costume.  A “Far Out” photo booth will be available for you and your group.  60’s Music will be provided by Mike and Carol Earley for your dancing or listening pleasure. And there will be a couple of games.  Dress up in you frayed jeans, tie dye shirts, love beads, head band, granny dresses, granny glasses, peace symbols, sandals, ankle bells or whatever else to bring out your inner Hippie.  Bring:  BYOB and appetizer to share with 12 people.  Napkins, plates and silverware will be provided.

Bob Ross Art Class - All you artists or would-be artists will want to know that the next Bob Ross class is on January 23rd. One class of 10 from 9 to
Noon and one from 1 to 4 PM. $45 per person.  Register soon in the Activities Office.  We have eight seats available. The instructor, Larry Weirs, provides everything you will need to complete a painting except for a roll of paper towels and wet wipes.  Specifics are on the Bulletin Board across from the Post Office.   There are about six seats left.  Here is a picture of what we will be painting:

The Fabulous 50’s Dance on January 30th is sold out.
HB Hulsey, our Advocate for Veterans Affairs reported on some of happenings with the Disabled America Veterans (DAV).  The DAV has been working and petitionede to get a dedicated clinic here in the valley.  It has been approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs but it has to go to Congress to get it funded.  It has made it through the first hurdle.

The Fresh Fruit and Veggie Cart will again be coming on Thursdays from 9 to 10:30 AM at Doggie Row between Trophy Gardens and Winter Ranch.  We’ve had really good reports about the quality and the prices so be sure to take a look at what is offered.

Morning Meetings:  Home-made cinnamon rolls will be served every other week and when the home-made rolls aren’t available, we’ll have some kind of roll or donut for you.

The internet is available in Activity Room #3 when there is nothing scheduled in the room.  The password is on the Bulletin Board in the Room.

The Agency will be performing at the Dance on January 9th.   We sold about 144 tickets on Monday for the dance on January 9th.  (The tickets went out saying it was January 16th.  That is a mistake.  Remark your tickets to January 9th).  You can still get your tickets in the office until we run out but we are reserving seats.  The tickets are now on sale to the public so come on in and reserve your table.  We’ve sold 160 tickets thus far.  We only have this group once this year so get your tickets!!  If you are new to the park, this is the group that you don’t want to miss!   Although it is a dance, if you want to listen instead of dance, consider it a concert.  These guys are great!  JD would like to sell an additional 50 tickets!

Volunteers and/or Donations Needed:

JD needs more volunteers to help out with the Jams on Saturday.  The jams are the life blood of the Activities Department so if you have been thinking about volunteering, this is one of the areas that really helps the park out.  It keeps the Activity Department afloat!

Computer Group is looking for instructors in are area of expertise including Smart Phones, Tablets, and Laptops.  Contact Ron Doerschug.

Dale Loerch will again be collecting furniture or household goods for the needy in the Little Mexico section of Alamo.  He will be collecting large items such as appliances for furniture on Wednesdays.  Small items can be delivered to him at any time at their lot which is Lot 438.  If you have large items, give him a call so he can schedule picking up your items.  He has already collected a couple of couches, 2 chairs and a queen sized bed.  Just keep them coming as there are a lot of people in need!

Nora Minor could use some volunteers to help decorate for Valentine’s Day.  Meet her in the Large Hall on Monday, January 19th at 8:30 AM.

The Quilters for the Needy are in need of people to iron, sew or knot.  If you want to help out, just come to the Large Hall from 9 to 3 on Thursdays.

Respectfully submitted,
